Preliminary Task (Locations, Shot Types & Audiences)

In this video we have collated the clips together, which consists of the locations, shot types and audience. We have explained what we want to do in our music video and explain our pitch including our outfits and what mise-en-scene we are going to be using.

Preliminary Pitch

In this video we are talking about our pitch and we share our ideas for our music video. This is mainly focussing on the mise-en-scene, location and cinematography. We have gone to explain and explore our ideas further to ensure what we are planning to do for our music video.

Bruno Mars Lip Sync 2nd Edit

I decided to re-edit the video as the lip syncing wasn't in time and so I took a second edit with the comparison to the real version in the corner.

Bruno Mars - Grenade | Preliminary Task

This is our finished preliminary task, in the left bottom hand corner we have decided to put the real video so that we are able to see if we can compare it and see what we have done the same or different. There are definitely some differences as we couldn't get the correct mise-en-scene.

You Wanna What?

This is a cover video of the song You Wanna What?
We used videos of a group of girls who recreated this song, and tried to match their singing with the original video for practice. Furthermore, we also used it as a chance to try out some editing and transition techniques on the video. Here I learnt how to do  a overlay on top on a video.

Preliminary Task Final Video

This is the final video.
During this time I have developed some new skills, such as learning how to speed up certain videos on final cut express and also how to overlay a video. These skills can be useful for when we create our own music video.
I think what went well with out video is that out mise-en-scene are mostly accurate. The lip syncing is as accurate as we could put it. What could be improved are the framing, as some of the frames are not as accurate as the storyboard.

Preliminary Shot List

These are the shot lists for our preliminary task, which include the two locations we wish to use. For each location we added the relevant scenes, and with every scene we put in the action details and also the necessary props and costumes. To is to help aid us during filming and reduce time wasting.

Planning Preliminary Task

This is mine and Lauren's story board for Bruno Mar's "Grenade". We have chosen to do the first 30 seconds of the music video; however we are missing the first 10 seconds in this photo as Filip is also in our group but wasn't in.

Preliminary Task Story Board

This is the story board for our section of the music video Reptilia by The Stokes. It starts from 30 seconds within the video till 60 seconds in.

Preliminary Task Locations

These are the different locations that we have used; we decided to use a different wall so I will upload another picture. We used the chapel for the bedroom scene where he sits on his bed whilst it was raining. The window was sort of embossed so it was able to act like the rain and we used the blinds to make the shots darker like the clip. We used the top of the bike shed to make it look like a tunnel because of the lines that is indented. Lastly, we used the wall for where the actor walked past to seem as if he was in the tunnel, holding the rope attached to the piano.

What went well was that we picked good locations to match our music video. However what could have been better was lighting. Next time we might use some lights to get better lighting to match the superficial feel of the music video. Also next time we take the pictures of the locations, we will match it with the exact framing as our storyboard.

Taking pictures of the locations helps visualize the storyboard and also gives some idea to how lighting, props etc. can be set up.  

Lip Sync Practise

We were given the task to practise lip syncing to Bruno Mars' "Grenade" to prepare for our preliminary task. We wanted to see if we were good at lip syncing enough for our main project too. We chose this song to start off with as it was quite slow and therefore slightly easier to get the hang of lip syncing to. This task will also help us when choosing the genre of our song as we have found out what type of genre we are better at lip syncing at.

Lip Sync Practise

Music Videos often have some performance incorporated, and to make this performance believable the artist lip syncing must be realistic and on time with the music. So our group tried out lip syncing to see who could act the nest with the music. In the end we choose Sam, the first person.  




I think that it's good to have a trial for lip syncing because if it's done wrong the continuity can be lost. I also think that when lip syncing, not only does the mouth need to match the lyrics but also the facial expressions are a vital key to create continuity.

Lauren's Preliminary Overview

As part of overall project, creating a music video, we had to create a short section of a music video to experiment with filming, shot types, actors and editing. This was very helpful as it gave us an insight into what would be effective when creating our music video. Our group chose 'Grenade' by Bruno Mars. This music video had lots of interesting angles and shots and was the genre of a narrative. This meant that as well as the actor lip syncing they also had to act as well. I believe we created a successful short video and it was a great way to film. If I were to recreate it I would try to be more accurate with the props we used however this is something that I have learnt from and can remember when we create our own music video!

Preliminary Task Overview

Our task is to replicate a part of a music video. This is to help us develop a sense of how music videos are made, which includes the filming side and the editing. This will be helpful towards our main project of making our own music vide. My group have chosen the music video: Grenade by Bruno Mars. This particular video is a narrative video with the story being told in the shots, which includes a lot of parallel editing. We choose this music video as it had interesting shot types and was relatively easy to copy, as there was no need for special effects; however we had to find a lot of unusual locations on the school site because some of the locations in the video would have been hard to film.

Task Overview

Our task is to replicate a section of music video.
The aim is to develop an understanding of the film making of a music video, by experimenting and trying out new techniques within filming and editing. This is to help us for when we have to make our own music video in the future.
