Final Music Video Issues

Our music video is fully edited, but we will look through it once more to see if we can add or change anything if we aren't happy with it anymore. Unfortunately, the video wouldn't upload to YouTube yet and we have tried to save it in other places to upload it, but it hasn't worked, so in the new year, we hope to have it uploaded and edited fully.

Audience Feedback

This is out audience feedback for our draft music video.
There's relatively good reviews. Most of the improvement comments include shortening certain clips.

Mary: Editing and Filming update

For the past 2 weeks we have been filming, and then editing.
While we edit we started to realise that we had limited footage, so we had to go out and film more shots.

Furthermore, we re-filmed a certain location because we found that the dimmed lighting made the quality of the footage go grainy. So instead of using a darker background we put our singer in front of a white background. I personally think that this works out better for the overall theme of the music video. And the quality is much better.

    

These clips shows us playing around with some glitter. We wanted to use the idea of colours and glitter as a concept. We tried to show glitter falling down, but we found that the glitter was too fine to be picked out by the camera. But when we zoomed in, the glitter creates reflected coloured circles which we liked and put on our video as an overlay. This is scene in the first clip as the title comes in. We also experimented with putting overlays of flowers blooming, which we liked so it's featured a lot.

The third raw clip was filmed in school on a frosty day, we decided to take advantage of the weather and took some scenery footage.

Editing

We haven't uploaded a post in a while and this is because we have been spending our time editing. We have found lip syncing is quite difficult, but when it reaches the correct point of the song it is starting to build together. We have also been coming up with more creative ideas, where we have used glitter for an overlay as seen in the right hand editing screen. We are still filming some pieces to add to the video because we find that there are still some pieces missing.

Final Costume & Mis-en-Scene

Here are some of the final items we used in our music video:

This outfit was for filming at Waverley Abbey. I chose this outfit because I thought the bright silver trousers contrasted greatly with the setting and the black top, making the artist stand out more in the video. This is a common convention with female music videos as they the directors usually want them to be the main focus of attention.

This is the venetian mask that we used, to mask the artsist's confidence when she is not wearing her makeup (or her war paint). It reoccurs many times during the music video either when the artist is wearing it or holding it.















Here is an example of the artist wearing the mask during the music video as well as the second outfit. It is clear that the colours of the mask compliment the jumper however if we were to film again I Think I would have worn a brighter colour because the colours of the jumper are very similar to the leaves and some of the colours in the forest.

Here is another image were you can clearly see the colours of the colours of the jumper. I am also wearing a black skater skirt and burgundy Doc Martin boots to represent a more casual style that the artist has. 

Makeup for our Music Video

We created this makeup look in the green screen room to try and match the looks that I have found on Pinterest a few weeks before. We actually decided that the artist should put the makeup on during the filming so that we can do some creative editing of reversing the clip and speeding it up.

We also plan to ask our friends to feature in our music video and film them also applying paint to their faces.

Rough Cut 1

This is our rough cut after a few days, we found that we had to restart completely about 3 times as we were not happy with the beginning. The current beginning is what we have decided on for now, but may change in the future. We found that we were having trouble choosing which scenes to add, and saw that we had too much lip-syncing clips and not enough landscape... We may have to film some other types of clips. We found that we had to take random everyday clips, like the clip of our legs on the frosty grass. And also to create cool affects we've taken some clips of glitter close up. This can be seen in the beginning with the blue dots.

Analysis of Videos Produced by Other Students

In this music video that I found from Hurtwood House's YouTube page, there are a lot of things used in this that we could try and attempt at. There are some objects in the video and the scenes that would be a little harder to do, as they probably have a bigger budget and more supplies at their school - e.g. their starter scene. They include a lot of varied shot types which makes it more interesting and this also cuts to the beat of the song, especially at the beginning when she sings, "clap snap." They have also been able to achieve the UV scene with the neon paints, which in our video we are using, but without the UV lights; however I think that this will still make our video different and go along with the concept genre idea we are following. The use of only 3 scenes makes this video very simple, yet it is still very effective in the way they have edited the clips against the beat of the song and the lyrics, following Goodwin's rules.




This music video had a simple, but powerful storyline - therefore making it a narrative music video. I really liked the text that was so simple at the beginning, with the dull blue colours that showed behind it. The quality of this music video was excellent and they didn't need a massive budget to produce this. I'm not sure how they created the two wires connecting part - it was shot very well. There was a variety of shots, but they were quite invisible, as it didn't need to cut to the beat. The editing with the overlaid bird at the beginning, made it different and interesting. I think that they put a blue tone onto the clips to continue the sense of sadness and confusion inside the characters.








This music video is performance and narrative based. It includes various shades of filters on each clip as it gets further into the song. I think that this makes it interesting and different. There is a variety of different shot types with panning and tracking angles, especially when the main character is walking around and when there are shots of the band. There is an overlay of a bokeh effect on the performance clips, which I think makes it unique as they are lighter than the actual darker clip. The use of lighting makes it seem more interesting as it is coming from a lower angle on the performance clips, which we could take from to include in our video.
This relates to my music video because of the different editing techniques to make it seem more interesting

Analysis of Other A2 Music Videos

Clap Snap - Hurtwood House Media

I researched some other music videos to gain some inspiration for our own. I thought the the song clap snap had a similar upbeat tone to our song war paint and therefore I interested to see the editing techniques. I found that the music video cut to the beat very often especially in the chorus. I also really liked that towards the end of the music video, no shot was really the same with a variety of different angles and a fast pace movement overall. One thing I think I will take from the music video is the face paint idea as I think this definitely fits with our message from the song of identity and beauty. Unlike Hurtwood House we do not have a UV light therefore we will try to use our phone torches and the lights available to us.

BTS Footage

We used Animoto to create our stills in connection to our song. We found this difficult to express how we would edit each frame as it wouldn't allow us to. We are going to edit this again; but in Final Cut Pro.

StoryBoard Clip

Here is a clip of everyone contributing their ideas for the storyboard. We worked together to come up with detailed ideas of the music video. When doing this we thought carefully about the lyrics and how they would fit with the actions of the artist, this is one of Goodwin's rules that will help influence our decision making.

Costume, Hair and Makeup (Pinterest)

It was helpful to use pinterest as a research source for costume and makeup as there were many designs and styles I had not thought of. I particularly liked the glow in the dark face paint as I think it links closely to the title of our song, war paint.

As one of the themes of our music video is focused around beauty and confidence, we had the idea to use a Venetian stye mask to cover up the artist, not revealing her true face at the beginning of the video. As the tempo of the song picks up the artist will the reveal her face and take off her mask, identifying her true looks and becoming more confident in herself.

We want the artist to look stylish in the music video wearing simple but effective clothes such as silver trousers and a black top, possibly styling it with a fur coat. It would also be interesting for the viewers if the artist had a few costume changes and therefore we wanted to do this however keep the same colour palette.

It is important for our audience to have a say on the ideas of our music video therefore we will try to create polls for example a question like 'which location do you prefer? A or B?'

SurveyMonkey Analysis

This is a small survey I created to ask the audience what they would expect to see in a concept based video. From looking at their answers, I found out that many people didn't know what a concept based video was - even though it was described by a well known artist, Lady Gaga. There were a few similar answers where they suggested the video to be "crazy" and that people should wear "cool out of the ordinary outfits". Others suggests that there should be flashing lights, and dancing. To make it more interesting someone said they would like new original ideas with a clear but confusing story. I think we could use this to build on what we should do to make it different and exciting - this will challenge us a lot. For our video, this means we should take into consideration what we think is interesting by incorporating all our ideas together and choosing what we think is best and maybe change it to make it unique to fit with the answer that it should be more original.

Our Results

Editing, Shot Types & M-E-S Ideas

In this music video, I really liked the smooth flow and continuity, which was creatively achieved by the fading transitions. I think maybe in slow parts of our song we could choose this. I also like the warm toned colours, which are interchangeable to the darker colours, which can represent how the character Taylor Swift is portraying.




I really like how unique this is. I haven't seen a video before that uses pictures to depict the story. I think it makes the viewer feel uneasy because of how jumpy it is. I like the use of the POV shot too.




I really like how the beat is cut with the editing and how it switches from long shots to close shots. I think that this makes it more interesting to watch. The warm, vibrant colours and the outfits really show off how they want to portray the song, which I think we should consider a lot.

Health and Safety

I am going to analyse the different types of risks that we may face when filming in out locations, and then outlining how we are going to reduce these risks.




Woods and Abby
These locations are outside, which means there's a risk of getting caught in bad weather e.g. rain. This can be dangerous for our health and also the equipment. To reduce this risk we will look at the weather and choose a suitable date where there is no rain. Also just in case, we will bring waterproofs and umbrellas.
Secondly is uneven ground or twigs, this is a problem as we can hurt ourselves and we can also damage the equipment. To reduce this risk we will make to use a suitable area where the risks are low for tripping, and also we will be careful were we step.

Theatre and Drama Studio
These locations are inside, this means there will be less risks. But some of the minor risks includes tripping over bags or untidy areas. The danger is minor injury and also damage to the equipment. To reduce this risk we will clear the area that we will use.

Location Ideas

These are some ideas for locations we have for our music video. We have recently also decided to use a forest/woods location for our video.
